Traveler’s Diarrhea

Traveler’s Diarrhea

Man with stomach painTraveling is very enjoyable, but there are also certain problems associated with it that need to be avoided whenever possible. If you do happen to run into those problems, getting the proper treatment can also help to reduce your suffering considerably. One of the more common problems that many people experience is traveler’s diarrhea, sometimes referred to as Montezuma’s revenge. Understanding more about this condition can help you to see the danger associated with it. It can also alert you to the potential problems and how you can avoid it.

First of all, traveler’s diarrhea is relatively common when you’re traveling to a part of the world that is different from your own. It can either be a difference in the climate, or it can be a difference in the sanitary practices in that area. Most people equate traveler’s diarrhea to traveling to a Third World country but the fact of the matter is, you can get traveler’s diarrhea by visiting a nearby town when the sanitary conditions are not up to par. It is more likely for you to experience it in a Third World country but caution should always be exercised when you are traveling or even if you are eating out in your local area.

Traveler’s diarrhea is caused by consuming contaminated food or drinking water that has been contaminated. It is not associated with the food or water directly but rather, it is a digestive tract disorder that is caused by the bacteria associated with unsanitary conditions or the climate/area of the world that you are visiting. When you suffer from traveler’s diarrhea, you are probably experiencing abdominal cramps and loose stools, although there may be a number of other symptoms that are associated with it as well.

Fortunately, if you do happen to get Montezuma’s revenge, it is not likely to cause any more than an unpleasant evening or two. Most people are able to overcome this issue on their own or with the help of some medication. It is not a problem that typically is serious but it is unpleasant. If you do have a problem with traveler’s diarrhea, getting medical attention can certainly help to alleviate the problem. In the South Lake area, you can visit Better Faster Urgent Care to get checked out and get the necessary medication to get on your way and feeling better again.

woman with stomach painMost people who suffer from traveler’s diarrhea will have the problem while they are on vacation or traveling to another part of the world on business. If you are exposed to a bacteria that leads to this problem, you may also experience it after you return home from the trip as well. In most cases, the symptoms are going to improve within a day or two, and even without medical treatment, it may clear up within a week. The problem is, you may experience a number of different episodes of Montezuma’s revenge while you are traveling, which can make it very difficult to enjoy the trip.

There are a number of symptoms associated with this condition. Most people are aware of the fact that it causes diarrhea but it can also cause additional symptoms as well. These can include abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting, fever and an urgent need to use the bathroom. As a result of diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, you may also suffer a problem with dehydration. Pain may also be an issue that some people experience. If you have a problem with traveler’s diarrhea and it lasts more than a few days, it is best if you go see a doctor.

It is possible for anybody to experience this problem but if it happens in young children or older individuals, it can be a much more serious issue. That is also true of people who have a compromised immune system, and they are more likely to get this problem as well.

It may be possible to prevent a problem with traveler’s diarrhea if you take the proper precautions. This could include avoiding drinking any water while you are out of your area, and only drinking bottled water. You should also avoid foods that have been prepared with the local water, including washed fruit and vegetables. It only takes a small amount of the bacteria to lead to this problem, so the more you can avoid it, the less likely it will be that you suffer from it during the time that you are away.
